Innovating is the key to business success. Here are the top 5 most innovative companies on the web.

In the world of business, you have to innovate in order to continue to grow and attract new customers. When you set out to be forward thinking and innovative, it can be easy to lose focus once you start to achieve some degree of success. However, no matter how successful you become, the minute you stop keeping your eye on the horizon, you start to lose your edge.

There are some companies that excel at innovation and coming up with new ways to interact with their customers. Here are the top 5 most innovative companies on the web:

  1. Twitter – Twitter was a very innovative idea that has been catching on like wildfire. In 2009 Twitter only had about 20 million users. That number has exploded to more than 200 million. During the time of its largest growth, the company didn't stop coming up with new ways for users to interact with their followers and the site itself. They have a new interface and have introduced Promoted Tweets and even Twitter sized ads.

  2. Google – Google is always looking for new opportunities to help people access information on the internet. They have a clear mission statement and work hard to innovate in ways that advance their goals. Even though they have been the clear leader in search engine technology, they have taken chances and introduced other services like Gmail, Google Instant and now Google +1, to give their clients more ways to interact with their search results

  3. Zynga – Who knew that a little farming game on Facebook could launch a phenomena and turn a $400 million dollar profit. The social networking gaming company is worth more than Electronic Arts and has created Farmville, Mafia Wars and now Cityville; which has quickly become the number one most popular app on Facebook.

  4. Netflix – Netflix started as an idea that there had to be a better way to rent videos without having to worry about late fees. In spite of heavy competition, the business is a success and they are constantly working on ways to make streaming video more accessible to their client base. In fact, this year they reported that over 70 percent of their users stream content, which is up from last year's number of 41 percent.

  5. Foursquare – Location based social networking was an idea that caught on fast. Now, in spite of so many copycats, Foursquare is still the leader in check-ins. In fact, NASA astronaut Douglas Wheelock earned the NASA Explorer Badge after checking in while orbiting the Earth. They have expanded their service to offer discounts and merchant platforms. Foursquare reports that they handled over a half billion check ins over the past year.
