More Benefits for Navy Wives

Good news for Navy wives. The Navy offers a number of important benefits to help you out while your husband serves his country. The Navy knows that military life has its challenges, which is why it offers a number of ways to make things just a little easier.

Tricare. Sailors and their wives can take advantage of the military's Tricare health plan. Navy wives can enroll in Tricare Prime at no cost and receive free healthcare when visiting an approved provider or a military treatment facility. Wives can also enroll in supplemental dental plans.

Jobs. To ease the burden of finding jobs while being uprooted to different duty stations, the Navy offers employment assistance to wives through Fleet and Family Support Centers at each base. These centers offer classes and workshops to improve a spouse's job-hunting skills. They also offer guidance with resume preparation and employment counseling to help wives secure gainful employment.

Shopping Discounts. The Navy Exchange (NEX) and Commissary offers steep discounts on electronics, clothing, home items and groceries—many of which are often tax-exempt. Shopping at the commissary is only accessible to military members and their immediate families.

Survivor Benefits. A Navy wife can receive a tax-exempt $100,000 death gratuity following the service-related death of her husband. In addition, the Survivor Benefit Program provides other monetary benefits, which can pay a surviving spouse up to 55 percent of what her husband's retirement pay would have been.

Additional Benefits. These cover everything from legal aid and deployment support to childcare help. Each base offers its own specific set of localized benefits and aid programs. Wives should contact their base's Fleet and Family Support Center to learn about all the different benefits they may be eligible to receive.
