How to Develop Your Telephone Interview Voice

Posted by

One of the ways you can enhance your marketability, is to develop your speaking voice when you are using the telephone. In prescreening calls and actual telephone interviews, your voice quality and articulation is absolutely critical. Since the person conducting the prescreen call has only your voice and a resume by which to judge you, the quality of your voice is something that can make or break the interview.

Practice
Voice improvement is not something you can just read a book about and expect it to significantly help you. Instead, you must practice voice strengthening and articulation exercises on a regular basis to obtain improvement. Since vocal chords can be developed and fortified, you have to make a conscious effort and maintain it to reach the kind of results you want.

Learn from the Experts
There are some excellent cd programs available that can help you develop your ability to speak with authority and conviction. One program that has helped me immensely is Roger Love’s program entitled “Vocal Power.” Another good one is “The Sound of Your Voice” by Carol Fleming. What is nice about these programs is that you can hear the authors demonstrate the sounds, as they walk you through the exercises. This leaves little doubt on how you can properly practice to develop you voice.

Posture is Important
Your posture is another factor to consider when you are speaking on the phone. You should be sitting upright in your chair, or better yet, standing up. This allows your voice to take full advantage of your lung capacity. It also keeps blood flowing more effectively and allows you to think more clearly.

Another career enhancing strategy is to rehearse your telephone interviews with a career search buddy. By actually talking to each other on the telephone as you practice this process, this can give you the experience you need to be able to do it confidently when you are doing the real thing.

Don’t leave your telephone voice to chance. Take the necessary steps to develop it, and you will be on your way to the job that is just right for you.
