Biggest Job-Hunting Mistakes

In a competitive market, a single slipup can sabotage your chances at a dream job. The stakes are highest during the final stages of the hiring process, when employers are looking for ways to decide between equally qualified candidates. Investing the time to avoid job seekers' biggest mistakes can help you move smoothly through the interview rounds and into the open position.

Weak Resumes

A resume can be your most powerful tool, but only if it is well-written. Some of the biggest mistakes job seekers make involve the resume, such as including boilerplate descriptions, failing to include a professional summary or using the same resume for each job, to name a few. Other candidates send in resumes that are packed with text and impossible to scan. When you take the time to create a concise, clear and compelling resume, you can avoid some of the biggest mistakes that plague job seekers.

Lack of Research

One of the biggest mistakes you can make during a job search is failing to do your research. When you aren't prepared for each step of the hiring process, you can make common mistakes such as forgetting to change the company name on the cover letter, addressing the application to the wrong person or failing to include the correct documents. Ill-prepared candidates often do poorly in interviews because they lack an understanding of the company's operations, industry position and current needs.

Unprofessional Behavior

Whether you are a recent college graduate or an industry expert, employers expect you to act professionally at every stage of the job search. One of the biggest mistakes that job seekers make is failing to realize that professionalism extends far beyond articulate speech and polite emails. Every contact gives the employer a clue about how you will behave in a work situation. Typos in cover letters, overly casual emails and poorly formatted applications show you as a professional who doesn't care about crisp presentation. Failing to respond quickly or arriving late can indicate disorganization or a lack of consideration. Although these small actions seem harmless in isolation, they act as red flags for employers.

Failure to Network

Networking is a crucial part of job hunting, and one that many applicants fail at. The most common error is the failure to network at all; in doing so, you lose out on valuable recommendations and insider tips. Other applicants network ineffectively by letting relationships slide, failing to ask for help or avoiding using their contacts. In the process, they lose out on the benefits of business contacts.

Often, the biggest mistakes you can make during the job hunt are a combination of smaller errors. Although it takes time to create perfect documents and cultivate an air of professionalism, the effort can pay off by setting you apart from other applicants.
