Playing By The Right Rules

When you start at a company as a new employee, you have to learn an entirely new set of rules that is different from your previous job. You already had a dynamite interview, so now it is time to wow your new boss even more with your work ethic, affable personality and excitement about your position.

Your first few days on the job give you a chance to navigate the company culture, meet your co-workers and soak in the office politics that play out every day. Just like your cover letter or handshake, a first impression goes a long way to determine how you handle life at the office. Keep your work ethic primed for job success and satisfaction no matter how your co-workers react to a new employee.

Arrive at work on time, every day. Just because your boss doesn't say anything about being late, that doesn't mean he fails to notice. Early arrival signifies you are ready for the rest of the day and eager to prove you were the right choice.

Dress appropriately for your office, especially if your employer has a written dress code. Know ahead of time if you need a collared shirt and tie or just a polo shirt. Start out more formally until your boss tells you otherwise.

Pay attention at company training. Follow the best practices your firm advocates to prevent any bad habits later. The employee onboarding process helps get new workers started out properly, whether someone is an entry-level clerk or a c-suite executive. Training a new employee correctly helps retain a person for longer periods. Listen to what people say, and listen well, so you can ask relevant questions later.

Introduce yourself to as many people as possible, and learn as many names as you can. You may repeat a few people on your first tour, but that may be better than seeming aloof. Let your co-workers know you have their backs from the get-go. An outgoing new employee makes friends easier.

Welcome this change into your life. Remember that employee onboarding is just as hard for the company as it is for a new employee. Both the organization and the new guy must get to know one another, for better or worse. Do not expect to adapt to your position right away because no one thinks you should fit in perfectly from day one. Your boss, your office and you have to go through some adjustment period, which is absolutely normal.

Play by the rules of your company from day one to impress your boss and to get noticed by important people at the firm. As a new employee, you can go far with the right attitude and proper grooming by people who know what to expect from your position.
