11 Ways to Say Thank You to Your Boss

Some people love gift cards, but others think they are too impersonal. If you want to say thank you to your boss at the end of a long year, skip the gift cards and go for something more personal. Here are some ideas to get your creative juices flowing.

1. Lend a Helping Hand

Your boss may not need another desk set or briefcase, so don't be surprised if she asks you not to purchase any gifts. If you still want to thank your boss, donate to her favorite charity or use the money you collect to help a family in need.

2. Create a Scrapbook

If you take a lot of pictures at work events, use your favorite shots to create a scrapbook. On the front page, say thank you by writing a personalized inscription to your boss. Instead of writing a generic message of thanks, be sure to mention specific reasons you are thankful.

3. Make it Personal

Don't give the same gift to everyone in your office. Say thank you by buying your boss something that shows you put a lot of time and effort into choosing the perfect gift. If you live in a region of the country known for a specific food, for example, treat your boss to that food the next time you go home to visit.

4. Keep Working Hard

A lot of employees slack off during the holidays. One of the best ways to thank your boss for his hard work is to keep giving the job your all, even when your colleagues are taking long lunches and looking for reasons to go home early.

5. Cook a Meal

If you are an accomplished cook, say thank you to your boss by preparing a meal and delivering it to her home. Don't go this route unless you know for sure your boss doesn't have any life-threatening food allergies.

6. Plan a Special Event

Get your colleagues in on the act by planning a special luncheon to show your appreciation for your boss. If you can't find a good lunch location, have a potluck party in the office. Say thank you with a framed certificate or token of your appreciation.

7. Send a Note

Many bosses keep handwritten notes long after they dispose of promotional items and Secret Santa gifts they no longer need. If you really want to show your appreciation, write a heartfelt note.

8. Do Something Creative

If you have a creative streak, write a song or poem in your boss's honor. What better way to say thank you than to memorialize your boss's efforts for all time?

9. Put Up Decorations

Say thank you by putting up decorations that express your appreciation. Handmade signs or banners that say "World's Best Boss" are a nice touch.

10. Announce Your Appreciation

Next time you attend a company event, stand up at the microphone and say thank you to your boss in front of everyone in the audience.

11. Offer Extra Help

If you don't have the budget for an extravagant gift, make your boss's life easier by volunteering to help with extra work and tasks.

If you want to say thank you, don't rely on impersonal gifts to communicate your appreciation. Instead, do something memorable for your favorite manager.
